Marcia (Swengel) Powell was born in 1943 in Urbana, Illinois. She attended Oakwood High School and then the University of Illinois, receiving a Master’s Degree in music education in 1968. She taught for two years at Uni High in Urbana, then moved to Southern California, where she lived until 2012, when she returned to Urbana.
In addition to her activities as a sustainable farmer, she teaches piano lessons, accompanies singers, runs an online dating service (for a niche market), attends the symphony orchestra concerts, and is secretary of the Champaign County Libertarian Party.
She has a daughter who lives in Portland, Oregon. Her sister lives around the corner and they get together weekly to play Scrabble (a lifelong tournament!) and piano duets, as they did when growing up. Sweet!
